Dear Senator Trask,

 

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss concerns for improving language education in the US. We appreciate the attention to our field. As language educators, ensuring the future of language programs in is our top priority, it is wonderful that our agendas are aligned.

 

Like you, we are looking for opportunities to promote increased economic growth and national security, but we see that growth as a challenging to meet in the face of removing foreign language studies. Our position is that both economic growth and national security will be best served by expanding foreign language programs.

 

In increasingly globalized times, with the increase of major corporations finding success with international collaborations, we view it as paramount to continue strengthening young US citizens’ abilities to communicate in international settings for the benefit of US corporate success.

 

Additionally, we view US citizens as most responsible and capable for maintaining US national security. Because the majority of threats to the US are communicated in foreign languages, the national security agenda can only be met through continued support and even expansion of international language learning opportunities.  

 

As leaders in the education of language, we are happy to continue supporting any language agendas that will make for an increasingly prosperous, and truly great, United States.
